Stuck Again, But Still Creating

Another year, another breach… and yet somehow, here I am, still finding beauty, inspiration, and a little bit of chaos along the canals. Last year it was the Macclesfield Canal that stopped me in my tracks; this year, the Llangollen has decided to play the same trick, with a breach at Whitchurch. Once again, I’ve been unable to make it to the floating markets I’d been looking forward to, and yes, it’s a little frustrating—but there’s always a silver lining.

This year, my trusty companions aren't just Lilydog and my narrowboat home—it’s also Bobby the van. Having Bobby along has been a game-changer. When the canal won’t cooperate, I can retreat to him, my little mobile studio, and create art on my own terms. He allows me to explore further afield, set up mini retreats for myself, and take a breather when the world outside feels a little stuck.

A Magical Day

Just the other day, the Llangollen was dusted in snow, the world hushed and glistening. I couldn’t resist stepping out with my camera to capture the frozen canal scenes, knowing they’d make perfect references for paintings. And indeed, my first piece of the year was born from that snowy day—an instant reminder that inspiration doesn’t always need wide-open roads or bustling markets. Sometimes it’s right there, in the quiet, in the stillness, even when everything else is on hold.

Being stuck isn’t exactly fun—but it’s not wasted time either. It gives me a chance to slow down, to focus on my work, and to reflect on the journey itself. Art and travel have always gone hand in hand for me, and these little unexpected pauses are just another part of the story. So here I am, once again, navigating canals and creativity, grateful for Bobby, the snow, and the unexpected opportunities that come with being “stuck.” I may not have reached the floating markets this year, but I’ve discovered something equally valuable: the joy of making, exploring, and seeing the world in a different light, no matter where I end up.

How to keep in touch.

Although The Art Boat is unlikely to get to the usual floating Markets this year, there are a few events in the pipeline for the upper stretch of the Llangollen. I also hope to manage a few pop ups, locations and weather permitting.
